Updated 13th September 2010. Kevin Rudd, former Prime Minister of Australia, now responsible for Foreign Affairs, never
told the media that immigrants, and especially Muslims, should adapt to
Australian culture, language and beliefs, or otherwise leave the
country. Its a hoax. See What Kevin Rudd didn't say, but everyone wishes he did. Sad
Update: Tuesday 3rd March 2009: Ten days ago I noted 100 searches in 3 days on variations of "Kevin Rudd Muslim Speech" that arrived at this blog. This past week it has been 1100, and is now topping 200 each day. I am delighted to welcome readers and invite you to check out the hoax post above as well as the wider focus of my writing.
Update: 22nd February. Thanks to James (comment below) who clued me in on what seems the fuss regarding Kevin Rudd. 100 searches in the last three days on "Kevin Rudd Muslim speech" or variants of that, and James comment had me looking further. On the basis of all I have read, I believe the "Muslims out of Australia" email is a hoax.
For any Muslims reading this. I am a Christian, based in an Anglican church as a peacemaker and community builder in an English city with upwards of 20% Muslim. I work in close relationship with Muslim leaders in here, and we are committed to making our multicultural city a place where all are welcome. I recognise the hurt you will feel from this email. It grieves me that there are people who hope to stir up trouble by putting out such hateful stuff.
======
Beware the hoax "Muslims out of Australia Speech"
I have been honoured that a pom gets to be the leading authority on the web of the the Australian premiere's views on Islam! 100 hits in the past three days, 250 over the past two weeks seeking information on "kevin rudd islam speech" is good newsfor those of us who seek to get their views out via this media. But I am also troubled -- this sort of thing usually means people are searching for something that everyone has heard of but no one can find!
As a peacemaker, seeking justice for the powerless, and working to remove the colonialist and neo-colonialist foootprints from our world, I have been impressed by Rudd's apology to the Stolen generations of Australian aborigines. I have written Kevins Rudd's Sorry Speech and In Australia, From Apology, a Hit Song Grows. (Incidentally this last week has been the first year anniversary of that speech to the Australian parliament, and Rudd has promised a review of progress: Anniversary of Apology to the Stolen Generations. Now that is accountability!) Those got me listed high on google for Kevin Rudd, and so when the current search became obvious, I wrote Why search for Kevin Rudd speech on Islam? When they continued and grew I did some more looking into the man: Ace, Kevin! Kevin Rudd's Christian and Conciliatory politics. Reading what I did, everything in me said that Rudd was not going to have said anything stupid on Islam.
It seems the issue is an email that has been circulating saying that Rudd told the media that immigrants should adapt to Australian culture, language and beliefs or leave the country.
The trouble is he didn't.
This is what he has said this year:
First: Questioned on in what his office call a Doorstop Interview in Hobart on 22nd January 2009 he said:
PM: I just looked at the text of these. The quotes as I see them are along the lines of how can a person rape his wife, then in relation to violence the quote is, first of all advise them that is your wives, you beat them, but this is the last resort. These are the reported remarks that come from this particular Islamic cleric. Could I say that these remarks have no place in modern Australia at all, at all. I would call upon this Islamic cleric to publicly apologise and repudiate his remarks. Under no circumstances is sexual violence permissible or acceptable in Australia. Under no circumstances. Under no circumstances are other forms of violence, physical violence towards women, acceptable in Australia. Nor are they acceptable in my view to mainstream Muslim teaching. So I say to this Islamic cleric, Australia will not tolerate these sort of remarks. They don’t belong in modern Australia. And he should stand up, repudiate them, and apologise.
Second: he made a speech at Australia-Indonesia Conference Dinner, Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney on 19th February. In it he spoke very positively of Indonesia, its diversity and the place of Islam in it:
We can discount the second, except to note
that Rudd is conciliatory in his style. The first is clearly the issue.
The Sydney Morning Herald has an article here Cleric's rant: Rudd demands apology ,
which includes a clip from Samir Abu Hamza, the Muslim cleric who gave
a lecture entitled "The Keys To A Successful Marriage" where he
considered whether it
was possible for a man to demand sex from his wife or to beat her.
A month after the event it is hard to find the extent to which this issue was covered by the Australian community. It doesn't seem that many made a big thing of it. Wife beating is not an issue they want to go out on a limb to defend. Abu Hamza's remarks (note this is not the British based Abu Hamza, currently fighting deportation) were picked up by some Islamist websites. For example Muslim Village, a site thats eesm to emerge from Australian branch of Hizb ut-Tahrir: Kevin Rudd lives up to Howardian standard in demonising Islam and Muslims
I will avoid calling Hizb ut-Tahrir extremist. Such language doesn't help as it sterotypes them and means we do not listen to them. In a word it demonises them, just what they are accusing Rudd of. That is not the way to solve a problem. They have something of a point, in that we do work from sound bites, yet to most of us born in the west it is hard to consider justifying such behaviour in any circumstance. The Palestininian argument to me has to be heard.
Anyway, Rudd's words have given credibility to an email supposed to report his words. Muslims Out Of Australia is actually titled Canada and America need a leader like this. I will not give the email credibility by repeating it here, but the link is to the Hoax-slayer.com site. It is also covered on Snopes.com here . It is circulating on right wing sites, eg here.
The real news is that the email was originally written reporting former Australian PM John Howards views and began circulating in 2005, with the current version dating from 2007. Referring to the Howard version, hoax-slayer says it "Contains elements of truth, but is highly misleading and inaccurate." That can not be said of Rudd, though some echoes of some phrases are to be found in the Abu Hamza interview, enough to give it some credibility. The Hoax-slayer article concludes that the email is:
Sending on factually dubious information such as this is unlikely to be helpful and may even add to the cultural divisions and misunderstandings that plague our strife-torn world.
Update:February 2009
Early in 2009 I began receiving versions of the above email that named Australia's current Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, as the person responsible for the supposed anti-Muslim stance. It seems that some rather unimaginative prankster has simply substituted "Rudd" for "Howard" in the text and replaced the photograph of John Howard with one of Kevin Rudd before sending on the message. The message is otherwise identical to the example included above. The "Rudd" version strays even further from the truth than the original. None of the comments or opinions included in the message have any connection whatsoever with Kevin Rudd or his Government. "
For clarity: Neither Rudd or Howard made this speech, but some of it is based on some things Howard and his cabinet did say in different places.
I do not know when the Rudd version appeared. My suspicion is
that it originated after Rudd's Abu Hamza remarks in mid January, or at
least was given impetus by it.
I will conclude with a reference back to Rudd's door step interview. I suggest he was wrong to deal with the serious issue of Muslim treatment of their wives in that context. It needs carefully judged statements to bring a focus to the problem and not to widen the issue. I totally oppose such remarks about women and about marriage. However I do well to take seriously those who hold them, and to engage with them in a way that honours them as individuals made in God's image.
I hope that the slur on Rudd's reputation goes away, though I must say I am quite enjoying having so many Aussies visiting. Come back please.
======
For history's sake: this was my original content at this post on February 15th where I was idly noting the surge in visitors to this site:
I have noted before that I am intrigued at how visitors find this blog. Currently the search turning up 5 or more visitors a day is Kevin Rudd muslim Speech - Google Search.
Perhaps the most common search is on Shia Muslims celebrating Ashura, which I have commented on here: Greetings on Ashura
Then during the US presidential election and since a big one has been people who are wanting to see if Barack Obama is the AntiChrist! Obama, Peace and the AntiChrist
If anyone coming here searching on Kevin Rudd and his speech on islam would do me a favour and leave a comment at the bottom to tell me which speech we are talking about, I will be happy to provide some comment (and maybe even informed comment).
I cannot remember if the interest predated Rudd's comments on the comments of Melbourne Cleric Abu Hamza: Cleric's rant: Rudd demands apology If that is what everyone is interested in I can tell you now I totally agree with Rudd for condemning it.

An email is circulating that is supposedly excerpts from a speech that Kevin Rudd made recently in response to calls for the introduction of Sharia law applying to Islamic Autralians who so desire. The speech apparently went along the lines of learn english and fit in and you're "welcome here - don't learn English and you can go home..." I was googling it as I find it hard to believe that such a spech was made by such a non-confrontatinal Prime Minister.

Thanks, James, that helps and is interesting. I find it hard to believe a Pom being searched for wisdom 20 plus times a day now!

Niether Rudds or the previous Prime Minister gave this speach
Posted by: Johnny B | February 23, 2009 at 02:24 PM
This is an email I received in South Africa today:
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd- Australia
Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks..
Separately, Rudd angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques. Quote:
'IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians. '
'This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom'
'We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society . Learn the language!'
'Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.'
'We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.'
'This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, 'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.'
'If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.'
Maybe if we circulate this amongst ourselves, WE will find the courage to start speaking and voicing the same truths.

This has been posted on the Dan Hannan blog for the daily telegraph in the uk today. 24.02.09

Thanks for alerting me to that Rarebreed. I saw the email text, this time titled "The UK needs a leader like this". Appreciated your comment there and reinforced it myself.
Nadene, thanks for putting the text of the email here. It has had so much web space had not wanted to reproduce it again. But since you put it here I will leave it.

Just searched for "Rudd email muslims" to see if the email my sister sent on (she knows I'd be annoyed by it) contained any truth. Nice site, thanks!

We all knew it was too good to be true. No politician could get away with talking sense anymore.

rudd's comments true or false on Muslims have a sway with non-muslims who feel swamped.

I don't understand why people who have migrated don't try to fit in.....at least try. And don't expect locals to change to fit into your culture. Give and take, what.

I stumbled on a reference to this speech (with extensive quotes) on the Watchmen on the Walls site (International Christian Movement for Human Rights). The link is http://www.watchmenonthewalls.com/issue498.html
Thanks for your discussion of this hoax.

Peter,
I am sorry to hear that you think that the ficticous email going around attributing nationalistic remarks to Australian PM Rudd are a 'slur' on his reputation. I wish that he had said them. My wife and I would be on the next plane to Australia kissing all of the socialists in the US goodby. Getting along with people is something that I do everyday because I want to. But it can only go so far before it is not give and take, but all give. It is in the human nature to always want more, but we have to be able to stop ourselves from expecting too much. We need to do this because the more that I take is less for others to have. We must be self-reliant. If I find myself in a bad situation that I got myself into, I get out of that situation, not demand that it be changed. I have no right to expect others to change for me. I am sure that your children have learned that from you, or you learned that from your parents, who I am sure love you very much.

Thank you for noting the invalid content of this email. It is annoying to receive email such as this from my father-in-law. Simple research verified it as lies right away. What a waste of time. It is one thing to circulate truth but another to publish lies for the purpose of increasing hate. As a Christian, I may not agree with other's beliefs but I am called to love them the same as my brothers and sisters in Christ.
Posted by: Diane | August 07, 2009 at 04:52 PM
Whether this is true or not I don't hear hate in this supposed speech. I hear someone saying that we should be tolerant. The message is not telling anyone to change their belief, just not to expect others to change theirs to accommodate yours. Especially, not to expect a country's nationals to change. Perhaps if we would concentrate on treating all humans with a higher degree of humanity these e-mails wouldn't be circulated at all. I too am a Christian, and as a Christian I believe I have NOT been given the divine right to judge. However, I believe I am expected to love all human kind, but it does not mean I have to agree with their beliefs.

Reconciliation & toleration goes both ways. The problem many of us as christians have when living & working in muslim countries is that our fundamental beliefs are rarely tolerated. I ended up frustrated by being consistantly called to apologise for our past while never in 14 yrs hearing a muslim acknowledge the millions of europeans & africans that they enslaved or whose countries & cultures they annexed.

I was hoping that I had found someone who has the intestinal fortitude to speak what I have been thinking for a long time. Isn't it odd that when serving in the US Navy and spending some 'liberty' time in Istanbul Turkey that I was instructed to take care in not offending those of the Muslim Faith and that I was in their land. It's about time that someone told Muslims in this country that it's time for them to take care in not offending me and my country when either visiting or relocating here. This country was founded on Judeo-Christian beliefs and that is how our law of the land was contrived. If Islamic tradition is incongruent to that of American heritage, then Islam needs to respect us for who we are and not attempt to change us.

Sorry to all recent commenters if what I have said in this post doesn't fit with your preconceptions of what I should have said or more importantly what Kevin Rudd should have said. He didn't say the above and so it is wrong to put the words in his mouth, even if we wish he did, think he would done, etc. I will only say this; one of my primary aims as a peacemaker is to make sure we are dealing with facts and not rumours. There are enough difficult and often ugly facts around so lets not waste time with the rumours and urban legends.
Posted by: ReconciliationTalk | August 12, 2009 at 10:09 AM
Alot of you are saying that PM Rudd did not make that speech on "Muslims get out of Australia". Why does he not publish a statement saying that he did not make that speech? That E-mail has been around since last year. If he didn't say it, Well, he should of and so should the leaders of every other country... If you are going to move to a different country then you should prepare to live by their standards, learn their language, and abide by their laws.
We, in the good old USA should insist that our government leaders enforce our laws and especially the ones pertaining to illegal immigration.
Posted by: Alan Stimmler | September 03, 2009 at 06:47 AM
All I can say is that I agree with the sentiments expressed in that article whether Rudd said them or not.I am sick & tired of Aussies apologising for our heritage which , coincidentally includes a Christian heritage, & lowering our standards to that of vocal minorities who come here with their own agendas...
I am not anti Muslim...the majority of my extended family are of that faith...but I know what the ultimate agenda is here & if we are not careful we will wake up one morning & find that WE are the minority in our own country..God help us then !
Wake up Australians...get back to the values & faith that this great country was founded on before it's too late !

The issue here is not Muslims as such, but the response to Muslims of the secular pc approach that finds its most galling expression in the public sector - not necessarily the politicians themselves. (Though I am sure they could do more.)
A very large number of Muslims in my experience do not want to deny our heritage, they just want us to be a bit more welcoming. And for me as a Christian I accept that as a fair rebuke. Welcome, hospitality and honour for all made in the image of God, whether Christian or not is foundational to my faith.
Rudd's apologies for the Aboriginal issues, and most recently for the treatment of British children involuntarily taken to Aus, is actually very un-pc. I cannot speak for him, and why he has not denied making the speech, but I can emphasise what he did not say. I am sure he could do more, but the agenda for any PM is huge.
In a very multicultultural place like Luton England where I work the failings of the PC straitjacket are working out in huge frustrations in society which are now exploding in the issues I have blogged about recently here. However the local government at least have recognised that in part and we are all working to construct new ways of talking to each other that are respectful and yet don't mess with the issues. But that involves a huge amount of deconstruction of ways of doing things and asking people to deal more honestly with issues and yet more gracious. At national government level that would be huge - but it has to be done.
So I agree with aspects of what is said in several posts above, but will still uphold the fact that John Rudd did not say these things!

I am sorry, the way i feel, and the way i see it, if he had said it, it put a smile on my face. they come here and complain about everything, and of course their freedom of speech and rights. well i didnt know they had any here. we do we are born american citizens. we made america. not them. we believe in god. they have ruled taken god out of schools, prayers at schools, on our coins now. Because they dont believe in god does our nation have to follow them. where is the eagle in our lives. why doesnt someone take a stand and fight these things. we have everyright. bottom line if you dont except go back where you came from and leave us alone to live in harmony. we the people are tired of this but it is going to take the power of the people around us to fix it. hopefully something will before God takes it in his hands.

Interesting how you disagree with Muslim extremists in every way but Palestine. It's sickening to me that if you can see the obvious lies they are telling everywhere else, you believe the ones they spew about Israel. Israel does not kill innocent people on purpose. Those "innocent" people they're talking about use HUMANS AS SHIELDS. Those "innocent" people believe infidels should be murdered. Those "innocent" people believe it's okay to dance in the streets when Westerners die, that it's okay to beat their wives if they don't give up sex, and that anyone who doesn't agree is better off dead. Of course, when it comes to the lies about "killing innocent Palestinians" you feel it "has to be heard." Perhaps if you were one of the JEWISH Israelis whose pregnant wife was killed by a suicide bomber you'd realize the "Palestinian" argument is as much based in reality as is the myth of women's cleavage causing earthquakes and floods. The fact of the matter is that nobody stands up for Israel because it's easier to believe these radicals can't possibly be insane about EVERYTHING. But, they are. Insane. About EVERYTHING.
I, too, along with many of the others on this board, wish Kevin Rudd had said that speech (the way the email promotes it).

You are obviously ignorant of the truth regarding the Muslim minority intent to wipe out the Christian religeon together with the people who worship it. refering to my previous comments - the people who died when the Dara was sunk by a bomb were Indian, Arab and Pakistani. the alleged bomber was of Muslin faith. the same people laid mines in the cross desert tracks that ant military vehicle driven by Arab of British were at risk unless a camel trod on themine first.
