James Richardson

An email is circulating that is supposedly excerpts from a speech that Kevin Rudd made recently in response to calls for the introduction of Sharia law applying to Islamic Autralians who so desire. The speech apparently went along the lines of learn english and fit in and you're "welcome here - don't learn English and you can go home..." I was googling it as I find it hard to believe that such a spech was made by such a non-confrontatinal Prime Minister.

ReconciliationTalk

Thanks, James, that helps and is interesting. I find it hard to believe a Pom being searched for wisdom 20 plus times a day now!

Niether Rudds or the previous Prime Minister gave this speach

Nadene

This is an email I received in South Africa today:

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd- Australia

Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks..

Separately, Rudd angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques. Quote:

'IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians. '

'This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom'

'We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society . Learn the language!'

'Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.'

'We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.'

'This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, 'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.'

'If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.'

Maybe if we circulate this amongst ourselves, WE will find the courage to start speaking and voicing the same truths.

This has been posted on the Dan Hannan blog for the daily telegraph in the uk today. 24.02.09

ReconciliationTalk

Thanks for alerting me to that Rarebreed. I saw the email text, this time titled "The UK needs a leader like this". Appreciated your comment there and reinforced it myself.

Nadene, thanks for putting the text of the email here. It has had so much web space had not wanted to reproduce it again. But since you put it here I will leave it.

Owen

Just searched for "Rudd email muslims" to see if the email my sister sent on (she knows I'd be annoyed by it) contained any truth. Nice site, thanks!

Edinbud

We all knew it was too good to be true. No politician could get away with talking sense anymore.

nig parkinson

rudd's comments true or false on Muslims have a sway with non-muslims who feel swamped.

I don't understand why people who have migrated don't try to fit in.....at least try. And don't expect locals to change to fit into your culture. Give and take, what.

ZanshinPost

I stumbled on a reference to this speech (with extensive quotes) on the Watchmen on the Walls site (International Christian Movement for Human Rights). The link is http://www.watchmenonthewalls.com/issue498.html
Thanks for your discussion of this hoax.

Peter,
I am sorry to hear that you think that the ficticous email going around attributing nationalistic remarks to Australian PM Rudd are a 'slur' on his reputation. I wish that he had said them. My wife and I would be on the next plane to Australia kissing all of the socialists in the US goodby. Getting along with people is something that I do everyday because I want to. But it can only go so far before it is not give and take, but all give. It is in the human nature to always want more, but we have to be able to stop ourselves from expecting too much. We need to do this because the more that I take is less for others to have. We must be self-reliant. If I find myself in a bad situation that I got myself into, I get out of that situation, not demand that it be changed. I have no right to expect others to change for me. I am sure that your children have learned that from you, or you learned that from your parents, who I am sure love you very much.

Diane

Thank you for noting the invalid content of this email. It is annoying to receive email such as this from my father-in-law. Simple research verified it as lies right away. What a waste of time. It is one thing to circulate truth but another to publish lies for the purpose of increasing hate. As a Christian, I may not agree with other's beliefs but I am called to love them the same as my brothers and sisters in Christ.

Mona

Whether this is true or not I don't hear hate in this supposed speech. I hear someone saying that we should be tolerant. The message is not telling anyone to change their belief, just not to expect others to change theirs to accommodate yours. Especially, not to expect a country's nationals to change. Perhaps if we would concentrate on treating all humans with a higher degree of humanity these e-mails wouldn't be circulated at all. I too am a Christian, and as a Christian I believe I have NOT been given the divine right to judge. However, I believe I am expected to love all human kind, but it does not mean I have to agree with their beliefs.

Angela Martin

Reconciliation & toleration goes both ways. The problem many of us as christians have when living & working in muslim countries is that our fundamental beliefs are rarely tolerated. I ended up frustrated by being consistantly called to apologise for our past while never in 14 yrs hearing a muslim acknowledge the millions of europeans & africans that they enslaved or whose countries & cultures they annexed.

NORM CHANNELL

I was hoping that I had found someone who has the intestinal fortitude to speak what I have been thinking for a long time. Isn't it odd that when serving in the US Navy and spending some 'liberty' time in Istanbul Turkey that I was instructed to take care in not offending those of the Muslim Faith and that I was in their land. It's about time that someone told Muslims in this country that it's time for them to take care in not offending me and my country when either visiting or relocating here. This country was founded on Judeo-Christian beliefs and that is how our law of the land was contrived. If Islamic tradition is incongruent to that of American heritage, then Islam needs to respect us for who we are and not attempt to change us.

ReconciliationTalk

Sorry to all recent commenters if what I have said in this post doesn't fit with your preconceptions of what I should have said or more importantly what Kevin Rudd should have said. He didn't say the above and so it is wrong to put the words in his mouth, even if we wish he did, think he would done, etc. I will only say this; one of my primary aims as a peacemaker is to make sure we are dealing with facts and not rumours. There are enough difficult and often ugly facts around so lets not waste time with the rumours and urban legends.

Alan Stimmler

Alot of you are saying that PM Rudd did not make that speech on "Muslims get out of Australia". Why does he not publish a statement saying that he did not make that speech? That E-mail has been around since last year. If he didn't say it, Well, he should of and so should the leaders of every other country... If you are going to move to a different country then you should prepare to live by their standards, learn their language, and abide by their laws.
We, in the good old USA should insist that our government leaders enforce our laws and especially the ones pertaining to illegal immigration.

www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=572136484

All I can say is that I agree with the sentiments expressed in that article whether Rudd said them or not.I am sick & tired of Aussies apologising for our heritage which , coincidentally includes a Christian heritage, & lowering our standards to that of vocal minorities who come here with their own agendas...

I am not anti Muslim...the majority of my extended family are of that faith...but I know what the ultimate agenda is here & if we are not careful we will wake up one morning & find that WE are the minority in our own country..God help us then !

Wake up Australians...get back to the values & faith that this great country was founded on before it's too late !

ReconciliationTalk

The issue here is not Muslims as such, but the response to Muslims of the secular pc approach that finds its most galling expression in the public sector - not necessarily the politicians themselves. (Though I am sure they could do more.)

A very large number of Muslims in my experience do not want to deny our heritage, they just want us to be a bit more welcoming. And for me as a Christian I accept that as a fair rebuke. Welcome, hospitality and honour for all made in the image of God, whether Christian or not is foundational to my faith.

Rudd's apologies for the Aboriginal issues, and most recently for the treatment of British children involuntarily taken to Aus, is actually very un-pc. I cannot speak for him, and why he has not denied making the speech, but I can emphasise what he did not say. I am sure he could do more, but the agenda for any PM is huge.

In a very multicultultural place like Luton England where I work the failings of the PC straitjacket are working out in huge frustrations in society which are now exploding in the issues I have blogged about recently here. However the local government at least have recognised that in part and we are all working to construct new ways of talking to each other that are respectful and yet don't mess with the issues. But that involves a huge amount of deconstruction of ways of doing things and asking people to deal more honestly with issues and yet more gracious. At national government level that would be huge - but it has to be done.

So I agree with aspects of what is said in several posts above, but will still uphold the fact that John Rudd did not say these things!

Beth

I am sorry, the way i feel, and the way i see it, if he had said it, it put a smile on my face. they come here and complain about everything, and of course their freedom of speech and rights. well i didnt know they had any here. we do we are born american citizens. we made america. not them. we believe in god. they have ruled taken god out of schools, prayers at schools, on our coins now. Because they dont believe in god does our nation have to follow them. where is the eagle in our lives. why doesnt someone take a stand and fight these things. we have everyright. bottom line if you dont except go back where you came from and leave us alone to live in harmony. we the people are tired of this but it is going to take the power of the people around us to fix it. hopefully something will before God takes it in his hands.

RK

too bad it's not true
MAKE IT TRUE
MAKE IT TRUE
perhaps all the other australians should organise a demonstration!

Laura

Interesting how you disagree with Muslim extremists in every way but Palestine. It's sickening to me that if you can see the obvious lies they are telling everywhere else, you believe the ones they spew about Israel. Israel does not kill innocent people on purpose. Those "innocent" people they're talking about use HUMANS AS SHIELDS. Those "innocent" people believe infidels should be murdered. Those "innocent" people believe it's okay to dance in the streets when Westerners die, that it's okay to beat their wives if they don't give up sex, and that anyone who doesn't agree is better off dead. Of course, when it comes to the lies about "killing innocent Palestinians" you feel it "has to be heard." Perhaps if you were one of the JEWISH Israelis whose pregnant wife was killed by a suicide bomber you'd realize the "Palestinian" argument is as much based in reality as is the myth of women's cleavage causing earthquakes and floods. The fact of the matter is that nobody stands up for Israel because it's easier to believe these radicals can't possibly be insane about EVERYTHING. But, they are. Insane. About EVERYTHING.

I, too, along with many of the others on this board, wish Kevin Rudd had said that speech (the way the email promotes it).

Mike Perry

You are obviously ignorant of the truth regarding the Muslim minority intent to wipe out the Christian religeon together with the people who worship it. refering to my previous comments - the people who died when the Dara was sunk by a bomb were Indian, Arab and Pakistani. the alleged bomber was of Muslin faith. the same people laid mines in the cross desert tracks that ant military vehicle driven by Arab of British were at risk unless a camel trod on themine first.

Peace in Luton

  • The peace of our town, Luton, is being challenged by the views of a few that seek to polarise the rest of us. As Christians and Muslims our commitment is:“in the face of extremist minorities that seek to separate us, we are united in the teaching of both our faiths, to love God and love our neighbour as ourselves.”
